In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore the traditional art of Ebru, a centuries-old paper marbling technique from Turkey where colors float and move across water to create unique, flowing patterns. Each piece is completely one of a kind, formed by your own movements on the surface of the water.

Using special brushes and combs, you’ll create a range of marbled effects - from organic stone-like textures and wave patterns to delicate floral motifs. You’ll also learn how to work with natural earth pigments and build layered compositions directly on water before transferring them onto paper.

The result is a series of beautifully marbled papers, each capturing a moment of movement and color. These can be taken home the same day and used for bookbinding, creative projects, or as unique gift wrap.

What you’ll learn:

• Basics of the Ebru marbling technique
• Classic patterns such as stone marble, waves, and comb effects
• Simple floral motifs like tulips or daisies
• Working with natural earth pigment colors

Good to know:

  • No prior experience needed

  • Finished marbled papers can be taken home the same day
  • Perfect for bookbinding, crafts, or gift wrapping
  • Wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy (aprons provided)

Ebru

Ebru, a trained design educator (IAC Zurich), carries her passion in her name: Ebru is both her first name and the name of a centuries-old art form in which images are created on the surface of water and then transferred onto paper, also known as paper marbling. Traditional Ebru art has its roots in Asia and developed into a significant art form, particularly in Istanbul. Since 2014, Turkish Ebru art has been recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, helping preserve and pass on this centuries-old craft. In her marbling workshops, Ebru combines her design expertise with years of experience, sharing the history, materials, and techniques behind this unique art form.
