
BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATIONS COURSE: Paint a fruit or seed with watercolours and other ink techniques

This course is a chance for beginners to try out scientific botanical illustration. We will draw and paint a fruit or seed. A selection of specimens will be provided, and you are welcome to bring your own fruit or seed. You will learn to observe the botanical characteristics of fruits and develop realistic botanical illustrations through precise and accurate drawing and painting techniques. We will work primarily with watercolours though we may try out pen and ink techniques towards the end of the course depending on time and interest.
What You'll Learn:
- Lighting and set up for botanical illustration
- Accurate drawing
- Understanding tonal values and form
- Colour mixing and painting with a limited palette
- Watercolour techniques for botanical illustration: wet-in-wet, washes, glazes, dry brush etc.
Good to know:
- There will be a lunch break of 1 hour, so the workshop duration will be in total 7 hours.
- Skill Level: Beginner to intermediate; no prior illustration experience required.
- The workshop is held in English.
- All materials are provided and included in the price.
- Outcome: Leave with a delicate botanical illustration
- Number of Participants: minimum 2, maximum 6



Teacher

Joanne Wong is a biologist and illustrator based in Zurich. She holds a diploma in Botanical Illustration from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and combines her background in biology with a love of nature and meticulous, precise drawing and painting. In her workshops she creates a calm, focused environment where beginners learn, step by step, to observe and depict plants realistically while enjoying hand-bound sketchbooks and carefully selected, high-quality materials.
